    US President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on a wide range of goods imported from Canada, in retaliation for what he called “unequal treatment” of US cars, dairy and alcohol.

    Everyday consumer items like wine and hockey sticks and industrial goods such as cement are among the goods targeted. However, several key exports will be spared, such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish.

    Prime Minister Mark Carney responded by saying Canada stood ready to “intensify” trade talks with US in the coming weeks.

    US launches fresh strikes on Iran, as Trump warns of retaliation for deaths of soldiers

    The US military says it launched another round of strikes against Iran to “further degrade” its capabilities to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

    The strikes – the 10th consecutive night of attacks – come after US President Donald Trump vowed to punish Iran for the deaths of US soldiers.

    Trump earlier said Iran had been hit “very hard” the previous night “in honour” of three US soldiers killed recently – two in Jordan and one in Iraq.

    In response to the latest wave, Iran saidit struck two oil tankers in the waterway, as well as US military assets in Bahrain and Kuwait, state news agency IRNA reported. President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran was now fighting a “full-scale war” with the US.

    Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said they have targeted infrastructure belonging to the US company Amazon in Bahrain, according to state media on Tuesday.

    The IRGC “attacked and destroyed the central data infrastructure of the American company Amazon in Bahrain with several cruise missiles,” state news agency IRNA reported.

    Andy Burnham is set to announce new support to help people with the cost of living crisis as his cabinet meets for the first time.

    The new prime minister vowed to provide “breathing space” for households struggling with the cost of living as he stood on the steps of No 10, pledging to set out details on Tuesday.

    Late on Monday night Burnham finished making appointments to his top team, with key appointments including John Healey as chancellor and Ed Miliband as foreign secretary.

    Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner also returned to government as housing secretary, as well as new defence secretary Wes Streeting.

    The prime minister is also expected to appoint his junior ministers on Tuesday.
